Caribbean has lowest tertiary enrolment in the West

THE Caribbean has the lowest enrolment in tertiary education in the Western Hemisphere, and Jamaica is among those countries with the lowest figures in the region.

This is according to principal of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Professor Archibald McDonald, who put the national tertiary enrolment figure at roughly 10 per cent of the population. Speaking Wednesday at the launch of the 5th staging of the Caribbean Broilers (CB) Group/UWI 5K Run Road Race, he argued that the figure needs to be increased if the country is to realise its development goals. read more...

The CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk event is in its fourth year and has assisted over 75 students since the inaugural staging in 2012. To date some $38 million has been raised and awarded to young outstanding academic achievers who are in financial need, the company said. read more...

 

CB Group UWI 5K raises $18 million for scholarships, sports development

The inaugural CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk raised $18 million which will go towards scholarships and the development of sports programmes on the UWI Mona Campus.

All Set For CB Group/UWI 5K

The second CB Group/University of the West Indies (UWI) 5K is set for Sunday, November 17, at the UWI Bowl in Mona, starting at 7 a.m.

Starting this year, title sponsor Caribbean Broilers has committed to a three-year deal worth $9 million. At last year's inaugural staging, 2,500 persons participated and $18 million was raised and 20 students were recipients of scholarship awards at UWI. Pitter, Barnett Top UWI/CB 5K

LIKE they did a week ago when they captured the top spots at the Portmore Burger King 10K Road race, Shawn Pitter, running unattached, and Tanice Barnett, representing MVP track club, won the male and female titles, respectively, at yesterday's inaugural UWI/CB Group Walk/Run and homecoming event at the institution's Mona campus.
